How do I create a white layer?
Add a layer or spot color named "HPI-White" (CMYK 25, 25, 25, 25) over the areas that should block the material effect, and save as PDF or AI. Not sure? Leave a comment and we'll set it up.
What is a white layer?
A white layer is white ink printed under your design to block the material effect. You need it when you use special materials such as holographic, glitter or transparent, or when you work with opacity. Typically for:
-
Solid colors on top of an effect material
-
Opacity in your design
If you want the pure material effect in an area, leave it transparent. No white layer is needed there. Unsure how to set up the file? Leave a comment and our team checks it before printing. Read more in What is a white layer? and the Dictionary.
Setting up a white layer
There are two ways to mark where the white layer goes.
Option 1: A new layer
Add a new layer in your design program, name it "HPI-White" and use the color CMYK 25, 25, 25, 25.
Option 2: In Adobe Illustrator
-
Use objects, not paths, for the white layer.
-
Apply the spot color "HPI-White" in CMYK 25, 25, 25, 25.
-
Place the white layer on top of the design in the file.
-
Set it to Overprint Fill so the layers print correctly.
Save your file
Export as PDF or AI to keep the layers and the spot color.
Opacity
A white layer can have opacity, so some of the material effect shows through. The color charts in our sample set show the standard opacities. Results vary between materials, so contact us if you're unsure. Our guide Understanding material effects explains more.
